Ahhhh… the smell of fresh leather in the morning! What could be better?? A few weeks ago, I opened the mail to find some pure leather goodness for my latest project. I have been waiting to redo these amazing vintage camping stools I found on Craigslist months ago. They were actually pretty cute even before I gave them a makeover with a gorgeous leather remnant from the LeatherHideStore.com. I’m kind of obsessed with how chic they look now:
Here’s what I started with. I scored these babies for $15 for 3 stools. A steal compared to what they go for in some online shops ($24 a piece!)
I wanted to keep the original wood color on the frame, but add a modern pop of color. I know a lot of people are over the color-dipped trend, but I don’t have anything like this in my home yet so I wanted to try it out! I taped off the bottom of the legs, about 4 inches up, and painted them with DecoArt chalk paint in my supply.
I finished them off with a light coat of wax and buffed it in for a smooth finish. After the paint and wax steps were complete, I removed the old green canvas seat from the frame of the stool. (I used needle-nose pliers to remove the staples.) I was finally ready for the beautiful leather!
The remnant piece I ordered from the Leather Hide Store was the Aged Copper Distress color…. isn’t it just yummy? My second favorite is the Lemon Meringue. Mmmmm. I kind of want them all! When you are choosing your remnant piece, the sizes range from 12-30 square feet, so you can select what works best for your project. I laid out the old seat on top of my leather to measure how big I needed my new pieces to be. When I had it measured to the new size, I cut it out with my regular sewing scissors and it was just like butter!
Oh, and I had a little helper who really wanted to be part of the process!
I used a staple gun to attach each end of the leather seat to the underside of the wooden frame. Then I cut another small strip of leather to cover the staples. I used hot glue to attach the leather and tuck it under the frame. It worked great!
That’s really all there is to it! A simple afternoon project, and now I have these beauties:
