Flannel Scallop Christmas Tree

I have been working on some new Christmas decorations for my mantel this week, and I’m sharing one of my favorites today! Have you noticed that plaid flannel is coming back into style?? {Makes me wish I hadn’t thrown out my hubby’s flannel shirts when we got married!} Well, I wanted to incorporate some of this cozy fabric into my Christmas decor, and here is what I came up with:

Before I get into the tutorial, I have an awesome secret to share with you guys! Maybe you already know about it, but just humor me :) You know how everyone makes their own versions of the “cone” trees? Glitter, paper, ribbon, ruffles, felt, etc… well, until now I have always bought the Styrofoam or paper mache cones. Those can get pretty expensive when you need several trees, especially for the larger sizes. Here’s a new option for only $1.99!

A plastic DOLL cone! I found them at JoAnn’s in the doll crafting aisle… they come in a 12″ height for $1.99 each! What a steal, I grabbed three of them :) I also picked up two sheets of white craft foam {the kind with an adhesive back} and this yummy plaid flannel:

I cut a piece of flannel to fit the sheet of craft foam, then removed the backing paper on the foam, stuck it onto the fabric and smoothed it out.

I cut it in half lengthwise, and then free-handed a scallop pattern on the edge and cut them out. {I made each scalloped strip a little different in size so the pattern would get smaller it goes up the tree.} Then I started at the base and glued each strip around the tree with my hot glue gun. I overlapped the pieces in the back at the same spot so the front would look nice :)

Here’s the final result:

I can’t wait to show you the rest of my mantel this weekend! We’ll be co-hosting a super fun Christmas Mantel Link Party with the fabulous Emily from 52 Mantels, and some of our favorite blog friends :) Make sure to stop by on Saturday and link up your mantels!

Oh my gosh — I LOVE these flannel trees. So cute! And thanks for the tip about the doll cone. What a great idea! Cones can get pretty expensive, you are right — I usually wait until I have a coupon. Thanks so much for sharing with us!
